CCS Technical Workshop 2025 - Toward building a CCS value chain in Japan - , Tokyo, 29 January 2025

The "GX Promotion Strategy", approved by the Cabinet in July 2023, sets out a policy of supporting advanced projects which become role models to develop a business environment for starting CCS projects by 2030. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) started the "Support Program for Advanced CCS Projects," which provides support for the deployment of CCS model projects including not only storage projects in Japan but those overseas as well, with the aim of promoting decarbonization across the entire Asia-Pacific region.

The Geological Carbon Dioxide Storage Technology Research Association (GCS) is promoting the development of technologies that contribute to ensure safety and to reduce cost of CCS projects under a project commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE), as a leading member of the GCS, is promoting technological development and activities which include field tests of multi-sensing technology using optical fibers at the storage sites in Japan and overseas, development of evaluation methods to ensure the safety and integrity of faults surrounding CO2 storage sites, and development of "CO2 emission sources database" and "CCS cost estimation tool" which play useful roles for realization of a CCS value chain.

This workshop will highlight cutting-edge activities and technological developments overseas and in Japan towards building a CCS value chain. The latest achievements and lessons learned from the Gorgon CCS project in Australia will be shared with a focus on effective utilization of reservoirs. Also, the updates on the outcomes and latest progress of technology developments by GCS-RITE, initiatives related to the CCS Business Act and the status of JOGMEC's activities to support Advanced CCS projects will be provided.

We will also have a poster session and a networking reception as opportunities to exchange opinions and have interactive discussions with the invited speakers and our researchers.

We look forward to welcoming you in person or online at the workshop.
